What is a girl’s shield made of? One simple, yet precious item, her faith. Faith is this … belief, confidence, hope, truth, assurance, certainty, sureness in what we hope for, but what we cannot see.
Her shield is fashioned through this… her faith in Jesus, in his life, his death and his resurrection. In his gift – our salvation, which also comes with the inheritance that will never parish, spoil or fade that is being kept for us in heaven. These very things make up our Shield. We through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Peter 1:3-5)
There is something different about her shield, rather than wearing it she has to hold it. It takes some effort on her part.
Jesus tells us that it really isn’t that heavy…“If you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘May you be uprooted and thrown into the sea,’ and it would obey you!
I am going to be honest… some days that shield feels much heavier than a mustard seed. Our feelings can get the best of us and instead of feeling faith-FULL we can feel faith-LESS.
We need to know this…faith isn’t a feeling – it’s a choice. We choose to trust, to believe, to put our hope in God…in the good days and the awful days. We trust that He is good, that He is faithful, that He loves us. No matter what the circumstances around us say.
The Message says it beautifully… Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good. Romans 8: 26-28
We choose to lift our faith shield
Trusting that what are we not capable of – God is
Arrows of fire will come… they will. We have an enemy, he’s real. He wants to steal from us, kill us and destroy our lives. If we look around, we will see he is hard at work.
Roman soldiers had a practice of soaking their shields in water before battle. When the flaming arrows would hit their shields the flames would be extinguished. We can do the same, only we soak our shields in the Living Water of Jesus, that never, ever runs dry.
