But God Series

Eve’s… But God … Moment

Eve was in the Garden of Eden having a conversation with a serpent, not just any serpent, the enemy of our souls, the devil himself.  I have often wondered if Eve found it strange that she was having an out loud conversation with a reptile.

These words were exchanged between them…

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.

Genesis 3:2-4

Oh Eve, in hindsight we know that you did not heed your …but God, moment.  Eve knew what she was and was not to do.  She even spoke it out loud…but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’

Yet it only took a few words from the serpent to convince her otherwise.  Eve had her choice of any tree in the garden…but one.  Don’t eat from that tree, don’t even touch it, or you will die.  She fell for a lie….”You will not certainly die.” The devil was and is a liar.  He does not even try to hide it, he blatantly lies. He loves to help us along into sin.

Like Eve, sometimes we believe him.  The consequences are big and not worth the taste of any fruit, no matter how delicious it may look.

Sin entered the world that day, we each battle it today.  Sometimes it can look so delicious, so inviting.

That one little lie to avoid a confrontation.

That one item forgotten in the cart that finds its way to the car.

A jealous thought.

Words coming out of our mouths that should have stayed in.

When we allow someone to convince us that a sin, is not a sin.

My list could go on and on… But God… says don’t lie, don’t steal, don’t covet, don’t gossip, don’t sin… the consequences are BIG.

Will we learn from Eve, will we listen?
