The Realitiy of Living Water

Jesus offers our Woman a drink, of not just any water, but Living Water.  She of course, associates it with the ‘natural’ and is thrilled to not have to make the lonely, daily journey to the well.

I have been thinking about Living Water for days now.  What is it really?   What does it feel like?  How do we know we have it?

As I look further into her story I see something amazing that takes place.  Once she realizes who Jesus is, Savior and long-awaited Messiah.  She changes her thinking from the natural to the spiritual.  The only Way she has freedom from her sin, the only One who can offer her this drink of Living Water, this happens…Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,  “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”  They came out of the town and made their way toward him. John 4:28-30

She goes directly to the very people who have hurt her the most, her neighbors.  The ones who gossiped about her, the ones who thought she was worthless, a tramp, a whore.  The ones who would not give her the time of day, who most likely would have been happy to see her stoned.  Basically her enemies.

She is so full and over flowing with Living Water that she freely shares it with her enemies, the very people she had purposed to avoid.  The people of the town could tell something was different, something had changed within her, Living Water.  Then, they made their way toward Jesus!

How can we know that Living Water resides in us today?  Like this…“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,  bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.  If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.  Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.  Do to others as you would have them do to you. “ Luke 6: 27-31 (Jesus Speaking)

Today I saw Living Water pour out from a family who has lost their precious daughter, Kayla Mueller.  A young woman who was pouring out her Living Water to Syrian Refugees.  Who was taken by Isis and killed as a result.  Her family did not spew hate, they spoke grace and Living Water flowed.  They spoke of carrying on their daughter’s calling and loving the Syrian people as she had. The changed their thinking from the natural to the spiritual.  I must admit, tears of conviction burned my cheeks.

We can all agree Isis is our enemy.  I will be honest, I have had feelings of hate toward them as I have watched and read of their horrors.  It is easy to hate them, it is easy to wish that they be wiped from the face of our earth.

What is the hard thing?  To pray for them, to love them, just as ‘God So loved the World, that He sent His One and Only Son.’  THE WORLD, not just me, not just you, not the good.  All, even Isis.  And so, I will commit to pray for these souls, until the love of Jesus flows from me, like the river of Living Water that He promised I would have.

Back to my original questions:

What is Living Water?  Forgiveness

What does it feel Like?  A long hard journey, as was Jesus’ Journey to the Cross

How do we know we have it?  When we can love like Jesus. Love our enemies.  Bless those who curse us.  Pray for those who mistreat us.

Our Woman at the Well, loved her enemies, she shared Living Water  Kayla Mueller, loved and blessed a people, who seem like our enemies, she shared Living Water.  Let us purpose to Love, Bless and wait for the Living Water to flow, no matter how long the journey…then this…

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.  Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:37-39
